Studied with Abbé Vogler alongside Meyerbeer, absorbing operatic traditions while developing German Romantic aesthetic. Influenced by Mozart's German operas and folk music traditions. His work directly influenced Wagner's approach to German opera. Contemporary of Beethoven, his style represents parallel development of romantic sensibility.

Early career combined conducting positions with composition, building German opera tradition. Middle period brought Der Freischütz's breakthrough success, establishing him as leading German opera composer. Later works including Euryanthe and Oberon showed increasing sophistication. His early death from tuberculosis cut short a career that was still developing.

Weber traveled to London to premiere Oberon despite being terminally ill with tuberculosis, knowing he might not survive the journey. He died in London two months after the premiere, age 39, having sacrificed his health for his art. The work remained unfinished in some aspects, yet its innovations influenced generations.

Weber's critical writings and organizational work establishing German opera companies were as important as his compositions to German musical nationalism. He essentially built the infrastructure that later generations, including Wagner, would use and expand.

Der Freischütz overture is evergreen—programmed constantly. The clarinet concertos are standard wind repertoire. His operas appear less frequently than they deserve, though Der Freischütz maintains repertoire presence. Piano works are specialist interests. Generally recognized as historically important, but only his most famous works regularly programmed.
