Caroline Shaw

Shaw's music is defined by its exploration of texture, timbre, and the physicality of sound-making. She uses extended techniques — breathy vocals, bowed harmonics, speech fragments — not as gimmicks but as integral expressive elements. Her harmonic language moves fluidly between Renaissance consonance, folk-influenced modality, and contemporary dissonance. She's a member of the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, whose exploration of global vocal techniques directly shaped Partita. She studied at Yale with David Lang and Martin Bresnick. Her collaborations with Kanye West, Arcade Fire, and others reflect her genre-crossing fluency.

Shaw won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Partita for 8 Voices at age 30, becoming the youngest recipient in music. But perhaps more remarkable than the prize was the piece itself — it uses the human voice to produce sounds ranging from Renaissance polyphony to beatboxing, throat singing, and whispered speech, all organized in the framework of a Baroque dance suite. It defies every category while sounding utterly natural.

Shaw is also a accomplished violinist who performs regularly — her dual identity as performer and composer means she writes with an insider's understanding of how musicians make sound. Her string writing is particularly inventive, full of techniques that only a player would think of.
