Jenkins

Jenkins's music is characterized by hypnotic, repetitive patterns influenced by minimalism, rich choral textures that blend Western and non-Western vocal traditions, and a gift for memorable, singable melody. His harmonic language is tonal and accessible, often modal, with textures that shimmer with exotic percussion and world instruments. He's not afraid of directness — his music communicates immediately and powerfully.

Jenkins came to classical composition through jazz and progressive rock — he was a member of the bands Nucleus and Soft Machine before turning to composition for advertising and then concert music. His choral writing draws on the great Welsh choral tradition, while his incorporation of world music elements reflects wide-ranging global interests. Minimalist composers like Part and Górecki paved the way for his accessible spiritual style.

His early career was in jazz (playing with Tubby Hayes) and progressive rock (Soft Machine). He then became one of the UK's most successful advertising composers before pivoting to concert music in the 1990s with Adiemus. The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace (2000) became a global phenomenon. He's since produced a steady stream of large-scale choral and orchestral works, including Stabat Mater and a Requiem.

Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary began life as a television advertisement for Delta Airlines. The haunting theme became so popular that Jenkins expanded it into a full album, which became an international bestseller. It's a remarkable origin story — from a 30-second commercial to one of the most recognized pieces of contemporary choral music.

Before his classical career, Jenkins was the oboist and keyboard player for Soft Machine, one of the most important Canterbury scene progressive rock bands. His Soft Machine album from this era sounds nothing like his later choral music — it's a fascinating window into a very different musical life.

Jenkins is enormously popular with choral societies and community orchestras — The Armed Man is one of the most performed large choral works of the past 25 years. He's less frequently programmed by major professional orchestras, occupying a unique space between classical and crossover. His music draws audiences who might not attend traditional classical concerts, making him a valuable programming choice for accessibility.
