Delibes gave ballet music the same melodic richness and orchestral sophistication that grand opera enjoyed, creating scores for 'Coppélia' and 'Sylvia' that made Tchaikovsky jealous. His music is ravishingly beautiful, full of delicate orchestration and unforgettable tunes that serve dance perfectly while standing on their own as concert pieces. Though overshadowed by Tchaikovsky's ballets, his music influenced everyone from Ravel to film composers with its sheer tunefulness and sonic refinement.

Musical style, influences, and more
Delibes's music is characterized by elegant melodies, refined orchestration with delicate colors and perfectly balanced textures, and a gift for creating mood through harmonic subtlety rather than dramatic gesture. His ballet music uses leitmotifs and through-composition unusual for the time, and he favored winds and strings in transparent combinations. The music is graceful, often light in character, but never trivial—sophisticated craft supports seemingly effortless beauty.
He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and absorbed French operatic traditions from Adolphe Adam (his teacher and model for ballet music). His contemporary Bizet shared his gift for Mediterranean color. He influenced Tchaikovsky's ballet writing directly—Tchaikovsky admired 'Sylvia' enormously. Massenet, Fauré, and later Ravel absorbed his orchestrational refinement and melodic elegance.
Early career as church organist and theatrical répétiteur led to composing operettas and occasional pieces. 'Coppélia' (1870) established him as ballet master, followed by the even more sophisticated 'Sylvia' (1876). His opera 'Lakmé' (1883) brought operatic success with its exotic Indian setting. Final years brought teaching and additional theatrical works before his relatively early death.
When Tchaikovsky heard 'Sylvia' in 1877, he wrote that it was far superior to his own 'Swan Lake' (premiered the previous year), saying if he'd known such music existed, he might not have written his ballet at all. This remarkable admission from the greatest ballet composer shows how highly Delibes's craftsmanship and melodic invention were regarded by peers.
His opera 'Lakmé' contains the famous 'Flower Duet' that's become ubiquitous in commercials and films, yet the complete opera is rarely staged—it's a treasure of French orientalist opera with gorgeous vocal writing throughout, not just in its famous excerpt.
Ballet suites from 'Coppélia' and 'Sylvia' appear frequently on orchestral programs, especially pops concerts. Complete ballets are repertoire staples in ballet companies worldwide. 'Lakmé' appears occasionally in opera houses, and the 'Flower Duet' is performed constantly. He's evergreen in ballet world, less so in opera, but suite movements are programming favorites for their charm and accessibility.
