Missy Mazzoli

Mazzoli's music is characterized by hazy, layered textures that blur the line between acoustic and electronic sound, hypnotic repetitive patterns that build to devastating climaxes, and a dark emotional intensity that can feel almost cinematic. Her vocal writing is dramatically powerful and psychologically acute. She creates atmospheres — sonic environments that envelop the listener in a distinctive, slightly otherworldly soundscape.

Studied at Yale with David Lang and Martin Bresnick, and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. She co-founded the ensemble NOW with Bang on a Can connections, bridging the downtown New York new music scene with broader concert life. Her music absorbs indie rock, electronic music, and minimalism without being reducible to any of them. She's been a Guggenheim fellow and a key voice in the new opera movement.

Her early works established her textural signature with the ensemble NOW. Song from the Uproar (2012), a chamber opera about the explorer Isabelle Eberhardt, announced her dramatic gifts. Breaking the Waves (2016) was her breakthrough, and The Listeners (2022) for Opera Norway confirmed her as a major operatic voice. Her orchestral commissions have grown steadily in ambition and frequency.

Mazzoli's opera Breaking the Waves, based on the Lars von Trier film, was one of the first operas by a woman to be premiered at Opera Philadelphia's festival (2016). Its success helped catalyze a broader conversation about the underrepresentation of women composers in opera — and proved that the genre could tackle contemporary psychological drama with unflinching power.

Mazzoli co-founded the ensemble Victoire, which performs her music alongside arrangements of rock songs and original works that blur genre boundaries. The ensemble's sound — processed guitars, keyboards, strings — is essentially the laboratory where her distinctive sonic palette was developed.

Mazzoli is one of the most programmed living American composers, with commissions from major orchestras, opera companies, and festivals worldwide. Her operas are generating exceptional buzz, and her orchestral works are becoming staples of contemporary programming. She's a genuine audience-builder — her music speaks to listeners who come from indie rock and film as much as classical. Trending strongly upward.
