Notes

With its virtuosic solo part, rich orchestration, and awe-inspiring scale, Beethoven’s revolutionary Violin Concerto set a bold precedent for the grand concertos of the Romantic era. Violin star Midori performs it with “poetic introspection” and “exquisite tonal refinement” (The Strad), elevating the piece—which she calls “the ultimate violin concerto”—to a level of revelatory brilliance. Orchestra of St. Luke’s also rewards audiences with Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni and Felix Mendelssohn’s exuberant “Italian” Symphony. The performance is led by the revered Masaaki Suzuki, whose vibrant Carnegie Hall resume includes exquisite harpsichord recitals, directing Bach Collegium Japan, and more.
